I don’t know if I’ve had a chance to tell you

February 25th, 2006

I’ve going to study full time.
I’ve accepted a place in a Master of Business Informatics at the University of Canberra. I want to get some ‘traction’ in the course, so I’ve enrolled as a full time student in semester one; and using annual and long service leave to cover me between March and June.

The MBI is an interdisciplinary program and sits between an MBA and a higher degree in IT. I’m trying to take a middle line through IT and business alignment; the sociology of technology and work; and social informatics, with a focus on how people (particularly knowledge workers) use ICT and how IT systems can be designed to maximise the support of people’s actual work. (Sort of like doing sociology of technology or HPS without a BA Hons.)

I’ve enrolled in “IT & Business Alignment”; “Organisational Behaviour”; “Information Systems in Organisations” and “Designing for Human-Computer Interaction”.  The Org Behaviour unit is an MBA subject and taught in intensive sessions every second Saturday (no sleeping in). The rest are during the week and involve about 16 hours contact in lectures, labs and tutes.

I got the offer late, so I’m working and attending lectures until the end of next week.

The money element is more than a little scary (the computer has got to be replaced, quite apart from the fees); but I’m really looking forward to being on sabbatical. With some luck I’ll also do some writing, but the priority is to treat the study as the job.

That’s about all. Just thought I’d let you know!

Hope you’re well. Talk soon.

Love

Andrew
